News Update: Former Alaska senator Ted Stevens died in a plane crash

Former Alaska senator Ted Stevens died in a plane crash Monday afternoon. Stevens with his friends, including the former head of NASA Sean O’Keefe, were on their way to a fishing camp when the plane hit the side of a mountain outside Dillingham, Alaska, about 325 miles southwest of Anchorage. The crash killed 86-year-old Stevens along with four others, and left its four survivors stranded overnight until they were rescued Tuesday morning. Alaska State Troopers said the survivors including O’Keefe and his teenaged son are now at Providence Hospital in Anchorage with “varying degrees of injuries.” The National Transporation Safety Board is investigating the crash to determine the cause, but weather has been named a possibility. Known affectionately as Uncle Ted by many in his state, Stevens was a decorated World War II veteran and the longest serving GOP senator in US history. News Update: Research in Motion Takes on the Apple iPad With Blackbook (RIMM, AAPL)

Shares of BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) are trading 3% higher after Bloomberg reported that the company is in the process of launching a table-style computer this Fall. Dubbed the “Blackpad”, this new tablet is RIM’s attempt at taking on the widely-successful iPad from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Research in Motion has fallen somewhat behind in the latest round of the smartphone war as it struggles to compete with the fast growing Android-based phones and Apple’s iPhone. However, RIM is expected to launch an updated version of its mobile operating system at an event in New York next week, which is expected to enhance certain consumer-oriented features such as media playback and web browsing. The new Blackpad device is reported to be similar to the iPad in size, include WiFi and Bluetooth, and allow tethering to BlackBerries. Also, it supposedly has a front-facing video camera – a feature many iPad owners wish were included in their device. There has been no official statement from the company at this point so how much truth there is to the story remains to be seen. Nevertheless, the technology world will be closely watching to see if the iPad will start to get some serious competition.
