Bernanke is currently indicating that we are in dire economic trouble without any immediate solution. He points to high unemployment as the culprit while, coincidentally, new unemployment figures have increased.

Why, then, is today’s stock market soaring? Is it because the FED realized that Bernanke’s testimony would likely to cause a sell-off further reducing investor confidence so they decided to use one of those "other" tools in their arsenal to buy stocks and prop up the market?

From the outside, it just looks like a bunch of people with no practical skills trading imaginary money and getting rich. What do we have to gain from the stock market?
