Do you think my foundation causes me to break out? What can I do?
I wear bare minerals foundation and breakout with a few white heads here and there. I was my face in the morning with proactiv and at night with St Ives exfoliation scrub.
Is exfoliation enough to remove my foundation? Or should I invest in somthing like Olay makeup removing pads? And do you think maybe leftover foundation on my face causes my breakouts?
Tips?
I am a makeup artist.
There are several factors that could be contributing to your breakouts. First off, are you acne prone? I found that Proactiv is not very good at getting rid of acne, all it is is benzoyl peroxide. Instead, opt for a acne wash that is aimed at your skin type, i.e. dry, oily, combination (try SkinID or Neutrogena). Make sure you are adequately taking care of your skin:
You should be washing your face with an acne wash before you put makeup on, everyday. If you have oily/combo skin, no matter what foundation or acne treatment you use, you will still get oil build up which causes breakouts. To get rid of oil before putting on makeup, dab a cotton ball with alcohol or another astringent, and pat onto you t-zone. Follow with a very light moisturizer made for oily skin. If you have dry skin, make sure whatever moisturizer you are using doesn’t contain oil.
Use a primer. Rimmel makes a decent primer, and it’s only about $5 at your local drug store. Primer acts as a barrier between your skin and makeup, helping to stop your skin from absorbing the makeup and thus stopping makeup build up in your pores.
It is probably your foundation. Just because the foundation you are using is "minerals" doesn’t mean it won’t clog pores or cause acne! It’s a common misconception. Anything you put on your face will cause acne, simply because it’s smothering your pores, and when the pores try to secrete sebum (oil), it can’t get out of the pore and becomes trapped. The oils and makeup become backed-up in the pore, and cannot escape, and the longer you leave your makeup on, the worse it gets. If you don’t wash your makeup off at night, the oils stay in your pores causing pimples, blackheads and even severe infections. I have found that powder foundations can actually clog pores more, but it also depends on the person. Instead, try a tinted moisturizer, or Maybelline’s Pure makeup ($5), it’s made of 50% water and no oils:

At night, wash your makeup off with a LIGHT acne-scrub. Using an abrasive scrub everyday will cause little scratches in your skin that can become infected and turn into pimples. Make sure to gently lather up the scrub, using a little more pressure in the t-zone to clear out oils. Splash water on your face to get rid of the scrub (don’t rub off). Pat your face dry with a clean towel. Follow with a light moisturizer to rehydrate the skin. You can also use a mud mask or cucumber mask once a week before you go to sleep to help keep your skin balanced.
What you do in your life also contributes to your skins health. Do you smoke? How’s your diet? Do you exercise? Fruits and vegetables are very good for your skin. Try adding more of them to your daily meals. Avoid eating greasy foods or using oily products and then touching your face.
Hope this helps!
foundation actually makes your skin breakout. all foundation does.
ways to reduce the amounts of breakouts are less amounts of foundation and you have to be religeous on taking it off every night.
neutrogena has alot of face washers that you could even put on in the shower. its great.
hope i helped!
Makeup in general can cause you to break out.
It’s not the type your using, that’s just any make up in general.
Just make sure to wash your face thoroughly and get all the makeup off.
Wash your sheets once a week. I’ve started doing that and my face stays alot clearer.
&& i’ve just recently started using this new face wash from Neutrogena. It’s pink, and it works wonders! My face has never been clearer. I wash it with that stuff at night and in the morning.
It could be the foundation, i havent tried it, but my friend does and she gets blemishes often. Also it could be because proactiv is suppose to be used 2 or 3 times a day ? i heard thats the only way it works, but then i also heard it doesnt even work period. So proactiv could be the problem. Just stop wearing the foundation for a few days, with your regular skin routine and see what happens. If its still the same, go a few days without the proactiv and use the st ives in the morning, and still continue to wear the foundation. Good luck
try wearing concealer instead
and never forget these 3 steps
clense-tone-moisturize
actually if you put mud on yur face at night and then sleep and then when you wake up you can put darker foundation on then normal like much darker if you want to.btw do not take the mud off. and then youll look GORGEOUS dawlinggg.i do it evryday and i get sooooo many compliments!
I use bare minerals and it doesn’t make me break out. Try switching and using your proactive in the evening to get your makeup off better and your scrub in the morning. It could be the St ives that is making you break out since it is a creamy cleanser. If you think it is one of your products then try eliminating them one at a time and see if the break outs go away. It could be hormones or something else unrelated to your makeup as well. It could even be something you use on your hair that makes your skin react when your hair touches your face. You might try replacing your st ives scrub with a cleanser that has 2% salicylic acid and some scrubbing beads. That way you get exfoliation and acne control. Neutrogena makes great acne washes. If you can’t get the problem to go away it can’t hurt to see a dermatologist!
I’ve heard that a couple of people actually break out from using the Bare Minerals brush, so that could be the issue. Honestly, there are a lot of potential reasons why you’re breaking out. If you’re using St. Ives exfoliating scrub every morning and night, that could be the problem too. You really should only exfoliate every couple of days, definitely not twice a day, it’s just too abrasive. Switching to a makeup remover could help a lot or just a regular face wash because it will be a lot more mild on your skin. If you try that and you’re still breaking out, then you might just want to switch foundations. Though there are a few less products in mineral makeup, sometimes it still breaks people out. Good luck!
Bare Minerals has Bismuth Oxychloride in it that causes cystic acne!!!! It’s a well known skin irritant! Stop using it and you will stop breaking out!!!
